Regarding the pittsburgh shooting on Oct. 27, 2018
The Havurat Shalom community is profoundly saddened by the violence on October 27, 2018 that stole the lives of eleven people at a synagogue in Pittsburgh. Our hearts are with our fellow Jews there and around the world as we try to this enormous loss.
Our community's grief is immense, and it is amplified by our sense that we are sharing the grief of other marginalized communities in the US experiencing violence and loss. This mass shooting followed another earlier in the week in Kentucky that took the lives of two people who were targeted for being Black.
While we mourn the dead and process our shaken sense of safety as Jews in the United States, we also renew our commitment to our most deeply held values. We are proud to work in partnership with the Somerville Interfaith coalition to support immigrants and refugees. As so many have spoken out this week for Jews, we will continue to speak in solidarity with all communities experiencing fear, violence, discrimination, and other forms of oppression. We will persist in the work of repairing the world, and welcoming those seeking refuge.

regarding the New Zealand shooting on March 15, 2019
The Havurat Shalom community extends our deepest condolences to our Muslim siblings around the world in the aftermath of the mosque shootings in New Zealand. Our hearts ache for all those who lost loved ones, and for all whose sense of freedom and safety to gather in community and practice their religion in peace is again shaken by acts of hate.
We publicly affirm our support for and solidarity with the Muslim community as they mourn this horrific loss. We strongly denounce white supremacy, Islamophobia, and xenophobia, the hateful forms of bigotry that fueled this terrorist violence. In our increasingly global community, hateful speech can have horrific and far-reaching consequences. In confronting ideas of hate at home, we work towards a safer and freer world for us all. May the time swiftly arrive when all people everywhere can live their lives and practice their religions without fear.
